How to do less than 110%

I’ve had self-acceptance on the brain! In addition to my recent personal reflection on perfectionism, I wanted to offer some tangible support for anyone dealing with their own perfectionism or supporting someone else with this challenge.

Here are a few…

Things to explore in a journal, through art, or with someone you trust:

  • What does perfectionism look like in your daily life? What does it make you do, or avoid doing?

  • Who taught you to be perfect? Where do you think it come from?

  • What do you most fear, if you or your work are imperfect?

  • What’s at stake for you with this?

  • What is your perfectionism costing you?

  • What do you stand to gain if you break free?

  • What does “good enough” look like?

Actions to take:

  • Be imperfect on purpose.

    • Choose a low-risk project or task and make a point to complete it at 80%.

    • Make a mess or an intentional mistake.

    • What did you fear? What actually happened?

  • Explore the joy of being an absolute beginner, and try something new.

  • Give your inner critic a name, thank her for her concern, and send her on her way.

All of this takes time, patience, and practice. Hang in there for a long, but worthwhile climb. And remember, you don’t have to do any of this perfectly! Just keep putting the next foot down on your path.
