Put them in courage.

I recently worked through a YouTube drawing lesson with Lynda Barry, and it turned out to be a masterclass in confidence.

Barry started the class with four timed drawings, all sketched with eyes closed. After each, she became completely enamored with her live participants’ drawings. Her comments were so sincere and exuberant that I felt them as true weeks later via recording.

We drew eggs, bacon, and coffee with a fork and spoon. “Oh!! Yes. Yes! Good!” Mermaids came next, to her guffaws. “You can’t make that shit up!” The human skeletons earned a giant smile, hands on face. “I don’t know why it always works, but it just does!” The giraffe with dots? “I know you guys have a crush on it instantly, right?”

Also heard: “This is swingin’!”, “You get an A!”, “Perfect!”, and “You are my sunshine.”

It is such a gift to encourage another person to go, be, and do. To put them so solidly “in courage.”

Thank you, Lynda Barry (and Austin Kleon for sharing the class link in your newsletter).

During class, I created this love monster. He is very sweet, but he will eff you up.
