There will be days

Love note to self and anyone who needs:

Dear one,

There will be days when the spirited teeming of life will fill your heart with joy. It will comfort your fears and ease the human pain of feeling so small. The vitality around you will infect you with desire to dive in, live hard, and shout loud.

Other days, the boundless energy of all things will add to your sorrow. It may even surface a terrible rage, for the cruelty of continuity can press on our wounds. Your heart may ache for the ceaseless chatter of the living to, please, go quiet, in honor of the weight you now carry…and all that has been lost.

If I could, I would promise you only the good days. My greatest wish is for your delight—absent any disturbance of grief. Alas, as you surely know, I lack that power. And so, I must comfort us both with a lesser offering…this stubborn thought:

Whichever day you are living right now, take heart that you possess the gift of witness. You are one who notices and beholds the flow, the life force, the great circle, reality, truth, mystery, god?, the incredible magic of it all. Whatever name you call it (I can never decide), trust it to be big enough for all your joy, your lamenting, and even your questions.

In the end, darling, there is only awe—and our intrepid dance with this wild and constant energy. I love to watch you move…
